Back at the ME's office, Joplin's still avoiding Dr. Carrie Salinger. Their budding romance was derailed by Carrie's affair with Joplin's best friend, who's now out of the picture. Carrie seems to want to talk about it, but Joplin's not sure what there is to say.
To make matters worse, the dead woman who's not dead is a client of Tom Halloran, the high-powered attorney who made Joplin's life miserable during the murder investigation that almost killed him six months ago. Now Halloran is again dogging Joplin's heels, demanding answers and keeping secrets.
Joplin's starting to think he should have called in sick and stayed home with his cat Quincy and a six-pack of Yuengling.
When another woman is found in the same pose, with the same pattern of blood spatter—and this time there's no doubt she's dead—Joplin realizes Halloran may hold the key to the case, and the two not-quite-friends have to learn to trust each other.
